A separate “about” section on an entire website already about me? Bold move.
Growing up with a head full of dreams and a pencil in hand, I've always been captivated by the art of storytelling – whether it's unfolding on the big screen, leaping off the pages of a comic book, or echoing through the chords of a killer album.
From doodling on every available surface since the tender age of diapers and crayons, to crafting creative masterpieces that would make Picasso proud (I’m talking about Darren Picasso, my high school art teacher btw), creativity runs through my veins like caffeine through an advertising exec’s bloodstream.
“I wanted him to be a doctor or a lawyer, but Tommy insisted he could make a career out of what he’s doing now. From what I can tell, he has done that very well. He would be making more as a doctor though.”
my binge-worthy career story
If my career were a Netflix series, it’d have six seasons, zero filler episodes, and a respectable Rotten Tomatoes score. From humble beginnings as a designer who made questionable font choices to leading bold brand campaigns and mentoring top-tier creative teams, it’s been a fun ride full of plot twists, great collaborators, and the occasional “You want it live when?” moments.
So grab some popcorn (or coffee, if you’re at work — I won’t tell), and read through the seasons of my professional journey. Spoiler alert: Season 6 might just be the best one yet.
Season 1: A Dreamer Awakens.
Before he was building brands, our protagonist was deep in the design trenches — cranking out graphics, mocking up websites, and mastering the subtle art of kerning. From being a fanboy at the Calgary Flames to early morning Photoshop marathons at SMART Technologies, it was all about sharpening that creative eye and learning that Pantone 485 is never just red. It’s a classic origin story: scrappy, stylish, and full of “can you make it pop more?” questions.
Season 2: Art Director’s Cut.
Plot twist: the designer becomes the art director. In this next season, our hero levels up — leading integrated campaigns, pitching big ideas, and wrangling stakeholders with the finesse of a seasoned, well, wrangler. At SMART Technologies, Tommy was no longer just designing; he began shaping stories across web, through events, and brand marketing. Think Mad Men, but with fewer cigarettes and more brainstorming meetings.
Season 3: All Things Digital.
Cue the dramatic turn. At the Mental Health Commission of Canada, the stakes are high and the WiFi never sleeps. Tasked with managing all digital communications, our lead launches a new website, navigates public opinion in sensitive spaces, and transforms emerging social media platforms into tools for connection, awareness, and change. It’s strategy with soul — and maybe a few late-night live-tweeting sessions.
Season 4: Creativity Refined.
Welcome to the big leagues. In this high-energy season, it’s all about fast-paced marketing, slick creative, and brand stories that actually stick. Leading the charge at SportChek on the brand marketing team, our main character brings bold content to life — partnering with major sports leagues, pro athletes, and global brands. Think cinematic ad campaigns, real-time Olympic content, and the occasional coffee-fueled sprint to deadline.
Season 5: The Brand Kingdom.
This is the prestige season — layered, complex, with full character arcs explored. At the University of Calgary, our protagonist steps fully into his role as brand architect, thoughtful leader, and champion of a bold new visual identity. It wasn’t always glamorous (spreadsheets were involved), but shaping a brand that actually resonates made it all worth it. The foundation is built, the story continues to unfold, and the best scenes are still to come.
Season 6: To Be Continued…
The future is full of promise, pixels, and probably another rebrand. As a senior leader in the marketing and communications world, our hero is set to take on whatever comes next — keynote talks, new campaigns, and mentoring the next generation of designers who still believe Helvetica font is edgy. Through it all, he stays true to his roots: collaborative, creative, passionate, driven, and always ready with a well-timed GIF.
